NFC is the same technology behind Apple Pay and Google Wallet. In business cards, it lets you share your professional profile with a simple tap — no app needed.

NFC — Near Field Communication — is the technology that lets you tap your phone against a contactless payment terminal, a train barrier, a hotel door, or an NFC business card and have something happen instantly. In business cards it lets a passive chip inside the card send your profile URL to a phone the moment they touch. There is no app, no pairing and no typing.

What NFC actually is

NFC is a short-range wireless standard (ISO/IEC 14443 and 18092) operating at 13.56 MHz. It descends from the older RFID technology used in warehouse tags, but adds two-way communication and works at a much shorter range — roughly 4 cm — which makes it deliberate, safe and easy to use for one-to-one interactions.

A basic NFC chip has no battery. The reader (your phone) generates a small magnetic field; the chip harvests that energy, powers up for a fraction of a second and sends its payload back. That's why an NFC card never runs out of charge and doesn't need software updates.

How an NFC business card works, step by step

  1. You hand a card to a contact
  2. They hold their phone near the card (within ~4 cm; the exact "sweet spot" is usually the back-top of the phone)
  3. The phone's NFC reader energises the chip
  4. The chip transmits a URL — for example letsconnect.business/yourname
  5. The phone displays a small banner: "Open in Safari" or "Open in Chrome"
  6. Your profile page loads, showing name, role, contact buttons, socials, portfolio
  7. They tap Save Contact and you are in their address book

On iPhone XS and newer, iOS reads NFC tags in the background — no need for the contact to open any app or wake the phone from a specific screen. On Android the behaviour is similar as long as NFC is switched on in Settings.
